San Juan Island & Friday Harbor without a Car

Leaving your car in Anacortes and walking onto the ferry to Friday Harbor has so many advantages: You won’t need to make ferry reservations or show up an hour or two beforehand. Walking-on costs a fraction of driving-on. Once in Friday Harbor, you won’t have to deal with parking. And last but not least, you’ll burn a little less fossil fuel. Thank you for that! But the question remains: How do you get around on San Juan Island without a car?

Friday Harbor

The ferry lands right in the heart of this quaint former fishing village. Our Bird Rock Hotel is just a block and a half from the ferry landing and the waterfront. Friday Harbor is completely walkable, if a bit hilly, and offers over 25 eateries, nine galleries, three museums and countless shops, boutiques and the Farmers Market, all within a three block radius of our place. No designated driver needed.

Bird Rock is the only hotel on the isle offering free beach cruisers to guests. Those sturdy, one-speed bikes are perfect to ride around Friday Harbor or to a wine tasting at the picturesque San Juan Vineyard three miles out of town.

These fun, open-air busses stop at all attractions on the island, including the whale watching park and the sculpture park, plus an express shuttle to Roche Harbor every hour. You will find Jolley Trolley by the ferry lanes. Available end of May to mid October.
